Romance on the Hudson
Over the past two centuries, West Point has instilled the finest battle skills into each cadet. However, these young warriors were often overwhelmed by the gentle and pleasant ways of young ladies.
Early in the twentieth century, at the annual USMA Spring Formal Dance, known affectionately as The Hop, students from nearby female preparatory schools served as formal partners for the Corps of Cadets.
Invitations to the Hop were highly sought after by many young ladies, hopeful of a desirable match with the bright, ambitious, and well-connected cadets. Arriving by horse-drawn carriage and armed in the finery of that era, the ladies were eager to engage the handsome cadets in their smart uniforms.
Today the annual Spring Hop continues a grand tradition, brightly woven into the rich and colorful history of the USMA. In “Enchanted Evening at West Point ”, by artist Dru Blair, the tenderness of youth is artfully depicted, forever engraved in young and innocent hearts.|
